Before Nevada County became what it is today, it was shaped, carved, redirected, and transformed by gold.

On Wednesday, April 8, join us for an evening that dives into the powerful relationship between the Gold Rush and the land itself. Local historian Mike Stewart will explore the history of gold in the region, the mining techniques used during the rush, and how those methods forever changed the South Yuba River around Washington.

From early prospecting to more intensive mining practices, this talk reveals how the pursuit of gold didn’t just build towns — it reshaped entire landscapes, leaving a lasting impact that can still be seen today.

🎙 About the Speaker

Mike Stewart grew up in Washington, California, and spent 44 years as a firefighter serving the local community, including 21 years as Fire Chief. Deeply rooted in the region, Mike brings a lifetime of firsthand knowledge and passion for local history.

He is also the host of History Unfolded on KNCO Radio, where he shares stories that connect the past to the present — bringing Nevada County’s history to life for a wide audience.
